Lying south of Back Bay, northeast of Roxbury, and southwest of Bay Village, this neighborhood is built mostly of aesthetically uniform rows of five-story, predominantly red-brick bow and flat-front houses. There are eleven residential parks scattered through the South End, many with a central fountain and a border of cast iron fencing, as well as a series of sixteen community gardens and pocket parks.
The South End is home to the famous Boston Ballet, Boston Medical Center, the Boston Center for the Arts, and many more art galleries and artist studios. For the animal lover, South End is home to The Animal Rescue League of Boston, which features an animal shelter, rescue department, animal cruelty investigation and prosecution law enforcement department, and an animal behavior department and outpatient veterinary facility. Tremont Street, also known as “Restaurant Row,” offers a wide variety of diverse cuisines, and there is a growing retail presence with stores that cater to anything from men’s and women’s clothing to home furnishings and stationery.
